Chess Party in Stellenbosch

The chess party, organised by Chessmates-Skaakmaats was at Fandango on Sunday. People I knew previously who were in attendance: Anthony F. (who kindly provided me a lift there and back, and conversation on chaotic systems and computer models of human psychology, the fractal nature of plant life, and black holes and the entropy of the universe), John M., Mikhailo M., plus two people whose names I'll remember shortly - about 50% of the facebook confirmations. It was a cool, overcast afternoon, and hot chocolate was in order. For the first time I took down the moves of a game, as I've only played a handful of games since chess club in primary school. Playing against Anthony I forgot to take moves for a while (while tenaciously fending off attacks), but managed to write down the game against John without too many mistakes - which fortunately show up as invalid moves when you enter them on the computer. I downloaded Winboard/Xboard to record the game, and discovered it lets you play chess on the internet, against GNU Chess, or view games (save with a ".pgn" extension): [Event "Graham vs John"] [Site "Fandango, Stellenbosch"] [Date "2008.02.03"] [Round "-"] [White "Graham P"] [Black "John M"] [Result "1-0"] 1. d4 b6 2. e4 d5 3. exd5 Qxd5 4.
